ZOOEY + WINNIE

Actress & sometimes-singer Zooey Deschanel has written a couple of songs for the new Winnie the Pooh film, out on 15 April in the UK. Check out Zooey below chatting & previewing one of the tracks. Aww.

RIP SIDNEY LUMET

Sad news to kick off the week, but we can't possibly not pay homage to legendary director Sidney Lumet, who sadly passed away on Saturday at the age of 86. Lumet's work includes such modern American classics as 12 Angry Men, Serpico, The Verdict and (our personal favourite) Dog Day Afternoon; we've included the trailer below, but we'd like to leave you with this quote from the great man himself.

"While the goal of all movies is to entertain, the kind of film in which I believe goes one step further. It compels the spectator to examine one facet or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought and sets the mental juices flowing".

SYNCHRODOGS

Ukrainian photography is apparently worth keeping an eye on at the mo. We told you about Olena Slyesarenko last month, now please direct your attention to Tania Shcheglova & Roman Noven aka Synchrodogs, whose low-fi shots emanate an eerie and dangerous aesthetic that we simply love. Their work is by far the most engaging we have come across in quite a while. Visit their site for more.

THIS WEEKEND

XOYO is the place to be tonight in London. Jamie XX + v special guests will be playing their excellent sets in tonight's road-blocked FACT & Young Turks event from 10pm. It's £12 on the door & worth every penny. More info here. (EC2A 4AP)

And if you fancy something a little more sedate & bohemian, head over to Soho's latest gallery, Pertwee, Anderson & Gold, which is rapidly gaining a rep for all things whimsical & theatrical. Surrealist extraordinaire Nancy Foust's pieces are on display this Saturday, 12am - 5pm (W1D 3AQ).

AN HOMAGE?

File this one under 'cringe-inducing but oddly compelling'. Jared Leto decided to celebrate the 17 year anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death by... impersonating him. He doesn't do a bad job of it, to be fair, but the intention is puzzling - is a Hollywood biopic on the cards?

WILD BEASTS

Their album Two Dancers (pictured above) was one of our favourites of 2009, and now Wild Beasts are backbackback with new single Albatross. The song is pure must-hear gorgeousness. The vid is a bit A-Level Media Studies coursework but pleasant none-the-less. Check it out below. Their 3rd album, Smother, is out on 9th May - get it.

STONE ROSES REFORM

The massive cash cow reunion bandwagon counts another member in the form of Manchester indie rock band The Stone Roses, who have announced today that they are readysetgo to reform. Singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire have apparently buried the hatchet, paving the way for a comeback this year. The band initially split in 1996 after releasing 2 albums. Good luck to them!

NAUGHTY JACK WILLS

Clothing brand Jack Wills' latest ad campaign has been banned today, after the Advertising Standards Authority received several complaints, deeming it far too racy for its young, teenage target audience.

The shots feature attractive young people cavorting semi-naked on beaches (Abercrombie & Fitch, anyone?). See for yourself.

Call us cynical but aren't most 'banned' ads never actually intended to run in the traditional sense, but in fact exist solely to prompt extensive coverage through outraged column inches? Hmm.

HOME-GROWN: LUCY BLAKSTAD'S NEW ADS FOR FLORA

Our very own Lucy Blakstad's new spots for Flora Cuisine have just been released & we bloody love 'em. The ads star Vernon Kay, but we think you'll agree it's his mum Gladys that steals the show. Below are a couple of our favourites, but check out Flora's official youtube page for more. Hurrah!

TALIHINA SKY

What looks like a fairly awesome Kings of Leon documentary is on the horizon, people. Exactly when it will come out is a mystery, but we do know it is called Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon, that it will premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival (but only as a "work in progress"), and that we have this exclusive trailer for you to delight over:

IPHONE 5?

This is just an artist's impression, most likely based on whispers & rumours, but it's enough to get us excited. The new iPhone 5, due for release either in June or November (depending on which rumours you believe) is said to feature a faster processor, more RAM, a bigger & better display, a better camera, NFC technology + much more. Head here for more info.

GIZMO'S BAROMETER

Wassup, I'm Gizmo, the Home Corp pup.
Not long until the weekend kicks off!!
But let's crack on with this week's barometer first.
(click the titles for web-links)

WOOF!

Totally hooked on their yummy Beirut-style
street food in the heart of Soho.

You have to read this.

lolololol

GRRR!

Always lame.

Sad times for the arts in Britain.

Delayed until 2012, whaaaaaat?

JIMMY ASHBY: TOUCHING THE VOID

This week saw the return of a brave man to the warm comforts of the Home Corp offices. Our very own Jimmy Ashby spent a week trekking across the treacherous alpine landscape. Here's Jimmy's experience in his own words...

"I decided it was about time I test my physical resilience... by accepting to join a group of guys on a 6-day walk from Chamonix to Zermatt, over alpine mountains, glaciers and crevasses. It was a bloody nightmare! I have no training, no great skills at skiing in powder, never climbed with crampons and no idea why the hell I needed an ice axe.

But we did survive, and in hindsight it was worth doing. I got the chance to witness some amazing scenery, and this combined with being able to sleep in the same clothes for 6 days on the trot made for a very worthwhile and life-affirming adventure!"

ENVISION

We're absolutely mesmerised by this projection-mapped installation courtesy of Superbien for last year's Mobile World Congress. The public was invited into an isolated cube to discover this sublime artistic vision - stick with it all the way through.

IRON

Thunder! Lightning! Vikings! Owls! Tattoos! Agyness! It's Woodkid's sumptuous new video for Iron, and it's our music vid crush of the day.
