SIR SPENCER BREAKS RECORDS AT AUCTION

The auction record for a painting by Sir Stanley Spencer was broken twice today at Sotherby's in London. Workmen in the House (above), which had a top estimate of £2m, sold for £4.7m. Minutes later, a second painting, Sunflower and Dog Worship (below), which was estimated at a maximum of £1.5m, fetched a staggering £5.4m.

The previous record for a Spencer painting was back in December 1954 when Hilda and I at Pond Street (below) was sold for £1.43m. This impressive sale further cements Sir Stanley as one of the 20th Century's most important British artists, and demonstrates a particularly healthy market for the business of art.
