NETFLIX IS COMING

American provider of on-demand internet streaming media Netflix are said to be in advanced talks with ITV, upon their imminent UK & Ireland launch.

Potentially taking on current home entertainment competitors Sky, BT Vision, Virgin Media and Lovefilm, Netflix are said to have already agreed UK film rights deals with studios MGM, Lionsgate, Momentum & Warner Brothers.

Looking beyond film, they are now in talks with ITV (after negotiations with Channel 4 stalled earlier this year), in order to gain access to the terrestrial broadcaster's enormous catalogue of television content. Watch this space...

IF YOU LEAVE

Photographer Laurence Von Thomas had a simple idea: launch a photography blog, set an overall theme of peace & solitude, take open submissions from photographers from all over the world, and publish the best shots.

The blog, If You Leave, has been running since 2009 and is a runaway hit. So much so that Von Thomas is now launching his second book of selected works from the site, featuring photographs from over 250 international artists. (Find out where to buy it here)

Very little info is given about the work submitted or the creative minds behind it, which ads a welcome air of intrigue to the project. Check out our selection of excerpts from the book above & below, and make sure to visit the blog regularly for new work.

GOOGLE DIRECTIONS

Now this a new Google service we can get behind. From today, London travellers can get public transport directions with Google Maps.

Over a billion people use the capital's 18,000 bus stops & 250+ tube stations every year, so this is bound to attract a lot users. If you were a fan of Google Maps to find your way around town, well now you can also plan your journey from the very same page.

Simply go to Google Maps and click 'Get Directions' in the left-hand panel (as pictured above). This also available on mobile devices, natch.

GOOGLE+

We haven't touched on Google+ yet, largely because we're unsure it brings anything new to the table that Twitter and Facebook haven't already brought, but early figures show we could be very wrong.

The search engine's new social network has attracted over 10 million members in the three weeks since its launch. Facebook currently has 750 million members, while Twitter boasts 300m. At this rate, it's entirely possible that Google+ could eventually rival its more established competitors.

On the other hand, Google already has over 1 billion users to work with, which is basically the equivalent of 'recruiting in-house', so that might be accountable for that. Time will tell... In the meantime, here's a quick video that explains what Google+ actually is, in case you weren't sure (we're still not convinced).

SPOTIFY GOES STATESIDE

We've banged on about it before, but it's now official: Spotify has launched in the US. The popular online music streaming service has an ever-growing library of tracks (currently over 15 million), which you can manage on your computer & mobile device along with your own music files. It also links up with facebook for various social features. Check out the fun little video they put together to celebrate their stateside launch.

THE AMERICANS

There's an unsurprising but interesting rise in young artists and photographers using the internet both as a source of inspiration but also as a canvas for their craft.

We recently told you about Sandro Kopp, the German artist who paints his subjects via Skype. Now meet 24 year-old photography student Petra Stenvall and her ongoing project, The Americans.

Once again via the medium of Skype, London-based Petra travels the breath of the USA from the comfort of her home, directing and shooting her subjects from across the pond through her webcam. Each girl featured in the series was recruited after replying to a casting call and is completely unknown to Stenvall. The computer screen truly becomes the canvas.
